Grandfather Soldier

Memorial Day seems like a good time to share this photo of my Grandfather Lee. I only met him once. I was very young, but I do kind of remember him. He and my Grandmother were divorced when my mother was about 2. He then moved to Missouri and raised another family there.

He served in World War II and was captured and had to spend time in a POW camp.

He used to call on Christmas Eve and I would talk to him then. He seemed like a great guy.

Some Cocktail Recipes for your Weekend

Dole Pineapple produced this little handout guide somewhere around the late 1930's I would say. There are many cocktails listed that you can make with pineapple juice. I love pineapple juice and cocktails with them sounds even better, especially for this Memorial Day weekend.

Some of these are pretty wacky though. I don't think I will make a cocktail with an egg white in it, would you? If so try the Alameda Cocktail. And Creme de Menthe just grosses me out. If you love it, try the Green Pasture Cocktail.

I posted these on Flicker in the original size, so you can print it out. Open the brochure is about 6.5" x 8.5" Just click on the image to get to the link. Hope you have a fun weekend!

Collecting: School Photos and Educational Ephemera

A couple months ago Country Living Magazine had a layout about Educational Ephemera in their regular feature about collecting. The idea of the feature is to highlight what is the new hot thing to collect.

I've always been a fan of school and group photos. I like looking at all the different faces and if the names are there, even better. I like the way it looks in the Country Living layout and think it would be great in a office or library.

There are a number of school photos on the The Cedar Chest Etsy shop. Here are a few. To see them all check here under photographs.

boardwalk empire

I have been immersed in Boardwalk Empire lately. I don't have cable, so I am just now watching the first season on DVD.

Have you seen this show? It's great writing and acting and like Deadwood, a lot of it is based on actual people from that time in history. But, the thing that overwhelms me about this show is the sets and clothes and how amazingly detailed and perfect it is.

As someone who collects antique postcards and photos from this time, seeing the boardwalk and people in sharp color and detail is like watching the old postcards and photos come to life. Good period shows like this are like going back in time. Just imagine what it is like to be on the set!

I highly recommend it. I can't wait for season two to come out.
